Summer concert at the cathedral

Once a year Havelberg sits in the courtyard at the cathedral and listens. Panzerpionierbataillon 803 from the Elbe-Havel barracks invites together with the Hanseatic town and the Protestant cathedral parish. Heeresmusikkorps Neubrandenburg plays.

When and where

The date sits at the end of June, on a weekday evening. Battalion, town and parish name the day once it is fixed. You will find it in the events calendar.

The music is not in the nave, but in the courtyard on the north side of the cathedral, right beside the building. Chairs stand in rows on the cobbles. Who arrives later stays standing at the back or sits on the coloured chairs for the interval.

Doors 5.30 pm, start 6.30 pm.

Parking at the Domberg and at the water tower. The courtyard itself is the event ground.

What the evening is for

Before the first note the courtyard is already full. The youth centre and soldiers from the barracks sell sausage and drinks. The takings later belong to the charity total. The signs say the money goes to charitable ends.

Then the orchestra comes. The first half is usually more classical, the second more modern. The titles change from year to year, something new is always in. In the video below you hear a Udo Jürgens medley from 2025.

The first rows carry name and function plates. Regional faces sit at the front, guests from town and from outside mix in between. The evening is concert and meeting: see and be seen, start a conversation, keep it going. The audience is mostly older.

In the interval people go back to the stall. After the last applause many still stand. The courtyard empties slowly, the cathedral stays.

Who the money is for

It is a charity evening. Tickets, donations plus food and drink have come to between 5,000 and 6,000 euros in recent years. The recipients change. What stays: the money goes to charitable work on the ground, not to the orchestra.

A short history

Charity concerts at the cathedral have been held in Havelberg since 2005. Then Führungsunterstützungsbataillon 382 and the town invited together. 2014 was the last concert of that unit before it was dissolved. Heeresmusikkorps Neubrandenburg already played then. Later Panzerpionierbataillon 803 took over the series. Since 2022 the battalion has put the summer concert on again as a regular evening.

Practical notes

The courtyard is cobbles. Firm shoes help. Wheelchair spaces are possible in the centre aisle; the path stays historic.
The evening is outdoors. A jacket for later is worth packing, even in June.
A place to stay in town is rarely the problem on this evening. Still book early if you travel in for it.
