When houses tell stories
Long before online booking and star ratings, inns and hotels shaped the island town. On Lange Straße and Steinstraße merchants, officials, travellers and sometimes envoys stayed the night. Havelberg once carried more political weight than it does now.
Most houses from 1870 onwards still stand. Havelberg took little damage in the two great wars. After the political change in 1990 a large renovation began, which had not been possible in the GDR.
Hotel Kronprinz
Hotel Kronprinz (also called Kronenprinz) was the first house in town on Lange Straße. It was the representative hotel: large, central, a place where people wanted to be seen. On 2 May 1945 an act of arson destroyed the hotel and the neighbouring Café Giese. The gap stayed open for a long time; later the employment office was built there.

Inn zur goldenen Krone
Lange Straße 7, timber frame, listed, empty for years. The house dates from around 1700. The name “Goldene Krone” does not come, as is often told, from a stay by Tsar Peter the Great. In 1716 the Tsar lodged in the Propstei and met King Friedrich Wilhelm I there. The story of the Goldene Krone is different, and no less charming:
Around 1716 an English envoy fell ill on the way through and stayed longer than planned. The English government had the reception room fitted out at some expense. A gilded English crown was set into the stucco ceiling. That is the name. The valuable ceiling was taken down in 2009 for safety and put into store. Plans for a cathedral hotel in the 1990s, which would have included this plot, were not carried out. The building now belongs to an owner from Rathenow in Havelland; buying the neighbouring plot for a larger project failed.
Hotel Prignitzer Hof
On Steinstraße, the first street in Havelberg paved with stone, stood Hotel Prignitzer Hof. In GDR years the HO sign (Handelsorganisation) could still be read on the house. The hotel years are long gone. The town had the building renovated through the housing company; today it is used for longer-term living and sits in the row of houses again.
Other inns and hotels
For centuries shops and inns shaped Lange Straße. Names such as Hotel Stadt Havelberg appear in older papers. Some houses later became homes; others still wait for a new use.
