The lead in Havelberg: what guests should know

Since 1 January 2025 the Hanseatic Town of Havelberg has a public-safety by-law on keeping dogs on a lead (town council vote of 28 November 2024). It covers the whole municipality, including the villages.

Where the lead is required: On streets and in public grounds inside the built-up areas, and on marked paths and the land right next to them. “Streets” here also means paths, squares, car parks, bridges, pavements and cycleways. “Grounds” include parks, green spaces, sports fields and playgrounds.

For your stay that means: on the island town, at the market, in residential streets and on public grass, use the lead. If you tie the dog, people on foot, wheelchairs and pushchairs must still pass freely. Breaches can be fined up to 5,000 euros.

Outside the built-up area and in open country, state and nature-conservation rules still apply, for example lead duties in the breeding season under the Saxony-Anhalt forest act. Protected sites, river banks and woods can add further limits.
